As a parent of a school-age daughter, I haven’t decided what to think about the new cervical cancer vaccine. That’s why I was interested to learn the shot may soon be given to boys primarily to benefit girls.
Merck’s Gardasil vaccine is approved for use in girls and women, ages 9 to 26, to protect them against the human papillomavirus, or H.P.V., which causes cervical cancer. Girls can be vaccinated when they are as young as 9, although it’s recommended for 11- and 12-year-olds, before they are sexually active.
If you have been diagnosed with HPV of the Cervix, it is very important that your partner be examined by a health care provider who specializes in the treatment of HPV infection. Recent studies have shown that the male sexual partner of a woman with HPV or cervical dysplasia has a 60% chance of having HPV infection of the penis. This infection most frequently can only be detected with magnification as the lesions are very tiny. Male HPV infection must be treated in order to prevent re-infection of the female partner. In addition, untreated male HPV may eventually lead to cancer of the penis.
What people dont understand… and they should… a male patient with genital warts may not seem harmful ( since there is no pain or discomfort) to others— But—- and please take note..
Any man can pass the virus to a woman and render her very very susceptible to cervical cancer– which could ultimately be fatal.
I have a few patients spouses that have some bad luck– please get checked.
Oh yeah—- best advice– go buy a 99 cent magnifying glass and shave off all of your pubic hair and take a good look at yourself.
If you werent born with it— it’s not normal and should be taken care of by a Board Certified Doctor that specializes in this area– DONT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH YOU REGULAR DOCTOR— THEY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO !!!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 1 million new cases of genital warts each year in the United States.* There is no one “type” of person who gets genital warts. So they are something we should all be aware of.
Unlike cervical cancer, genital warts are not life threatening. But, they can be life altering. Even after treatment, genital warts can come back. In fact, 25% of cases come back within 3 months.
Penile pearly papules are tiny bumps on the rim of the glans or head of the penis. It is common for young men to be concerned about the dots because they look like warts or other growths. They are usually very small a couple of millimeters in diameter and are clear or pearly in appearance. If you have these don’t be alarmed. A note of caution just because you have pearly papules doesn’t mean you can ignore other bumps or lesions on your penis. Everyone who is not practicing safe sex and notices lesions that are suspicious should seek medical attention.

A common ingredient found in over-the-counter vaginal spermicides may ease the transmission of human papillomavirus or HPV infection, at least in animals, according to a new study.
HPV infection causes genital warts and the majority of cervical cancers.
“Spermicides containing nonoxynol-9 may enhance the ability of the HPV to take hold in the genital tract, at least in animals,” says researchers at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The study appears in the July issue of Nature Medicine. Here is the original paper.
As this study was not in humans, it needs further research. Nonoxynol-9 is found in lubricants, contraceptive jellies and creams, and other birth control products. In recent years, its use has been found in some studies to boost the risk of transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
